MCE ISO Mount

This programme is designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 only. I have only seen Windows Vista Media Center shortly and never used later versions. The programme presented here will likely not work on those newer platforms. I'm sorry I cannot provide an alternative for those.

The Media Center interface offers a comfortable way to list and play videos from the local disk or configured directories. But this only regards the MPEG and AVI video formats. Is is particularly not possible to mount CD or DVD images from disk to play them in the built-in DVD player application. MCE ISO Mount is to fill in this gap. At setup, it will be added to “More Programs” in the Media Center interface so that it can be started easily. The programme itself is no HTML application but instead an independent .NET Windows application, however, it can be fully used with the remote control. All CD images from certain directories are listed and can be mounted. The actual mounting of the images is done through Daemon Tools.

By default it scans the directories “My Documents” as well as the logged in user’s “Desktop” with all their subdirectories. Additional directories can be specified in a text file, with one directory per line, UTF-8-encoded. This file must be named directories.txt and by stored in the application’s directory (usually C:\Program Files\MCEISOMount). All formats supported by Daemon Tools are listed:

• BlindWrite images (*.b5t; *.b6t)
• Blindread images (*.bwt)
• CloneCD images (*.ccd)
• Cue sheets (*.cue)
• Compressed ISO images (*.isz)
• Media descriptor files (*.mds)
• Nero images (*.nrg)
• Instant CD/DVD images (*.pdi)
• DiscJuggler images (*.cdi)
• Standard ISO images (*.iso)
• Anything... (*.img)

Usage notes

Daemon Tools has a “Secure mode” since version 4. When it’s active, Daemon Tools will have the user confirm every mount action that has not been invoked through the tray menu (i.e. like through external applications like MCE ISO Mount). Since that window is too small for a TV screen and interferes with MCE ISO Mount’s activities, you should really deactivate the Secure mode. It is of questionable use on an HTPC anyway. This option can be deactivated in the tray menu under “Options”.

Requirements

This application requires the following runtime environment: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Redistributable (x86, German) (other architectures and languages available). This is already included in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Of course you also need Windows Media Center Edition (MCE). I have only tested this programme with version 2005, Rollup 2. I don’t know whether it will work with Vista Media Center.

Bekannte Probleme, Aufgaben

• Mausbedienbarkeit (momentan wird der Mauszeiger permanent ausgeblendet, das Programmfenster verarbeitet keine Mauseingaben)
• Nicht erreichbare Verzeichnisse (wegen Zugriffsverletzung) sollten gezielt ignoriert werden und nicht den Suchvorgang abbrechen. (Siehe Änderung in Version 1.0.1)

• Wenn beim Durchsuchen der Verzeichnisse eine Zugriffsverletzung auftritt (z.B. bei \System Volume Information), wird die Suche abgebrochen und eine Warnung angezeigt. (Ein gezieltes Ignorieren dieses Fehlers ist leider nicht ohne eine Änderung des Suchverfahrens und damit massivem Performance-Verlust möglich. Man sollte also dafür sorgen, dass alle angegebenen Verzeichnisse komplett lesbar sind.)
